Darkness in Heart of Darkness free essay sample

Every man and woman has a dark side to them. The characters in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness are no different. In this novella, a man named Marlow travels into Africa because he wants to fill the â€Å"blank spaces’† on the map, but what he encounters there is not at all what he expected or hoped for (Conrad 373). He finds that the colonists who came before him have turned into violent and covetous people. They have lost sight of who they really are and have forgotten the reason they went to Africa in the first place, to build a civilization. A certain darkness in the jungle has overtaken them, and they are overwhelmed and unable to realize it. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad uses imagery and setting to display the effects of the darkness within the jungle and within imperialism, while in â€Å"When I Consider How My Light Is Spent,† John Milton provides a more literal way that darkness can consume a human’s life. The title represents the spiritual and unexplored darkness within the characters. In the novella, the jungle brings out the greedy and selfish side of men, their own heart of darkness. It is a â€Å"night journey into the unconscious† when men go to Africa (Meisel 21). Even the doctor that Marlow meets warns him that when men go to Africa, they change, and â€Å"the changes take place inside† (Conrad 376). Kurtz goes to Africa as what society sees as a leader and a good man. He has ambition and the potential to be great. His intended, not knowing what Kurtz has become in Africa, says that there is â€Å"’goodness shone in every act’† that he does (Conrad 428). Kurtz is a man that, with good intentions, wants to bring civilization to Africa. â€Å"Kurtz came to Africa seeking adventure and advancement,† however once he is there, something dark takes over him, and he is consumed by greed and power (Meir-Katkin 588). He finds out that in this new place, he can control others and become rich through ivory. The good-natured Kurtz who wanted to be a hero for others is now only concerned with himself and what is good for him. He no longer carries with him anything that he did before. Kurtz has turned to the dark side, and he never comes back. He turns into a monster and can no longer control himself. Even when he has a chance to at least attempt to go back to whom he once was, he desperately tries to crawl away from it. The darkness inside him has taken over. The jungle is what kills Kurtz, and only when he is taken away by Marlow does he realize who he has become and everything he has done. All he can do is shout â€Å"’The horror! The horror! ’† (Conrad 423). Conrad uses Kurtz to illustrate what a place without the light of civilization or rules does to a man. Like Kurtz, but in a literal fashion, the narrator in â€Å"When I Consider How My Light Was Spent† has high hopes for his life. He believes that he could have been a great servant of God, but he goes blind, and darkness takes over his life. It bars him from doing what he dreams of, as Kurtz is barred from living the altruistic life had planned. Both men’s lives take a complete turn in direction when darkness takes over. No longer can they strive for their goals of greatness that they once held for themselves. Similar transformations occur in characters that have also been in the jungle as long as Kurtz has. The manager is also taken over by greed. He wants ivory and the wealth it brings just as much as Kurtz does, and he is envious of his success. He, too, turns into a shell of his former self, as Marlow describes that â€Å"there was nothing within him† (Conrad 384). Conrad uses this man to show that what happened to Kurtz is not a unique occurrence. Darkness â€Å"is a manifestation of evil,† and this evil is present in the jungle, and takes new residence in the form of characters like Kurtz and the pilgrims (Meir-Katkin 589). Darkness also represents the colonists’ blindness to their mistreatment of the natives. Aside from being a psychological issue, the darkness inside these men leads them to be extremely violent. The colonists use brute force and violence to assert their dominance over the natives. Kurtz displays this aggression by proudly displaying the heads of the men he has killed on sticks. This is the symbol that makes it clear that Kurtz has gone mad. Only a man completely consumed by power would do something like this. It shows that not only does he use violence, he is proud of it. He wants everyone to see that he is in control and that their fate will be the same if they cross him. Kurtz even organizes an attack on Marlow and his crew because he is so consumed by the darkness that eats away at him in the jungle. He doesn’t want to leave now that he has power and wealth, even though it has transformed him into the type of savage that he went to Africa to help  change in the first place. It is clear that he has turned especially toward violence when it is shown in his note that he wrote â€Å"Exterminate all the brutes! † (Conrad 407). He wants to be the king of the jungle, and have superiority over everyone and everything, no matter how many human beings, or in his mind, brutes, he has to kill to get there. It is not just Kurtz that has turned to brutality, though. It is all of the colonists. They have all the healthy black men chained up, and the others are sick and dying. Marlow tries to give one of them a snack, but he dies right there on the spot. The colonists are forcing terrible conditions onto the natives, using them as slaves, all while using the excuse that they are forming civilization. They may have gone to Africa with good intentions, but the jungle turns them into violent beings with no real concern for helping the natives. Darkness also casts a shroud of ambiguity throughout the novella. Marlow is constantly searching for answers, but can seldom find any. When he arrives in Africa, Marlow discovers that the steamboat he is supposed to sail up the river is damaged. This confuses Marlow, and he can’t see why or how this occurred, although he believes that it was done on purpose. He is also not sure what to think of Kurtz. He has no idea who this man is or what happened to him, but everyone seems to be talking about him. Marlow has only heard of Kurtz, â€Å"Yet somehow it didn’t bring any image with it [his face]† (Conrad 388). Kurtz is nothing but a mystery to Marlow. Then later, when Marlow’s ship is sailing down the river, it goes through a patch of dark, dense fog, when he and his crew are attacked by a group of savages, and they have no idea why. Both the fog and the attack add to the idea that darkness is a symbol for the unknown. The fog adds to the darkness and blinds Marlow and his crew, literally and symbolically. Literally, it blinds them from the attack and what was ahead. Symbolically, it was yet another indicator that Marlow doesn’t quite understand what is happening around him. Similarly, in â€Å"When I Consider How My Light Is Spent,† the narrator, after going blind, is left to navigate â€Å"this dark world and wide† without light and without, he feels, God (Milton 496). In the same way, Marlow is left to navigate the river in darkness without sight, not knowing what will happen to him and his crew along the way. With darkness, â€Å"Marlow loses the ambition and promise† that he brings with him to Africa because the lack of light depletes his intellect and ability to see clearly (Meisel 25). Conrad uses darkness to describe how Africa can change a man, and also uses it as a symbol to show how it can be a source of confusion and frustration. What is unclear is how it changes men and why. For John Milton, his darkness is real and it restricts him from seeing things literally. For Kurtz and Marlow, darkness limits both their ability to see what is real, and their ability to become the men they are supposed to be. Regardless of what it is, there is a heart of darkness in everyone and everything. Nobody is free from the shackles of darkness and what it can do to a person, which is what Conrad describes in Heart of Darkness. Everyone gets a glimpse of this sometimes in their lives when they start to get overwhelmed with greed, envy, or any of the sins; however it is vital not to get taken over by it, or the confusion that comes with it.

Using Assessment and Feedback Essay The purpose of this study is to determine if differentiated instruction has an effect on student achievement and multiple intelligences in a classroom. One of the best ways to address multiple intelligences in a classroom is for teachers to develop their understanding of the natural convergence of certain concepts. Dedicated teachers who are well practiced in a variety of strategies can more effectively address multiple intelligences in their classrooms. Direct instruction and differentiated instruction are two different teaching strategies. In direct instruction students work in whole group. The teacher explains the task to the students based on targeted learning outcomes. Students work in a large group on the required task in a timely manner. On the other hand, students who work in a flexible and/or cooperative group are guided with the strategy of differentiated instruction. The students in the group work together to master a set of skills depicted and explained in detail by the teacher. The teacher provides instruction based on the uniqueness of each student and his or her specific learning style. In differentiated instruction, students and teachers collaborate with one another to meet the targeted goals (Tomlinson, 2001). Teachers use differentiated instruction in the classroom by prescribing technology supported cooperation, which enhanced student achievement. Most important, significant increases occurred in student achievement for students in the treatment group who used Internet-based software that differentiated instruction based on student needs and targeted learning outcomes. In the same way, teachers who are trained to use CAI and cooperative learning in quality professional development programs notably and effectively can change their teaching practices. Technology-based instruction in the classroom requires training. High-quality professional development is ongoing staff development at the school site for administrators, teachers, and other instructional staff to understand student needs and improve results (National Staff Development Council, 2004). Teachers at the targeted school come to the table with varying levels of ability, technology skills, and knowledge of computers. Professional development is a key factor in providing teachers with the mechanics that assist in understanding and applying the technology in differentiated instruction. The staff at the targeted school receives monthly technology-based professional development. The goals of the professional development sessions are well defined. According to Joyce and Showers (2002), effective professional development includes ongoing modeling, practice, feedback, and reflection over time. In a typical coaching model, literacy coaches and teachers engage in a cycle of demonstration, observation, and reflection (Mraz et al. 2009). Together, both participants demonstrate, observe, reflect, and consider how such teaching decisions influence students. Another level of reflection occurs when the coach and teacher consider the learning outcomes of the students. As this happens, teachers develop a vested interest in coaching and start to see the benefits of reflection within their practice. Oftentimes, such awareness inspires teachers to continue their engagement in professional development and reflection. They become stakeholders in their own learning and seek ongoing support from their literacy coach. Differentiated support, based on teachers individual needs and learning styles, is crucial for the work of a literacy coach. Learning happens within teachers, not to them (Tomlinson McTighe, 2006). One-size-fits-all professional development focuses on the dissemination of the same information to teachers and does not consider application or individual learning styles. Yet teachers are unique in terms of their pedagogy, experience, and content knowledge. Therefore, learning should be differentiated to provide multiple options for taking in information, making sense of ideas, and sharing the information learned (Tomlinson McTighe, 2006). If teachers are expected to provide instruction responsive to students’ learning style needs, it is essential they be provided with the training and experience necessary to do so (Evans Waring; Honigsfeld Schiering, 2004). However, teachers who effectively implement the experiential approach do not focus on the hands-on nature of constructivist experientialism to the exclusion of serious mental involvement. Indeed, students must also interact mentally through reflection and conceptualization of their experiences (Kolb Kolb, 2009). The implementation of this involves active experimentation and concrete experiences in the hands-on stage and reflective observation and abstract conceptualization in the minds-on stage (Young, 2002). Traditionally assessments have been used to measure how much our students have learned up to a particular point in time (Stiggins, 2007). This is what Rick Stiggins alls assessment of learning and what we use to see whether our students are meeting standards set by the state, the district, or the classroom teacher. These summative assessments are conducted after a unit or certain time period to determine how much learning has taken place. Although Stiggins notes that assessments of learning are important if we are to ascribe grades to students and provide accountability, he urges teachers to focus more on assessment for learning. These types of assessment — formative assessments — support learning during the learning process. Thomas R. Guskey suggests that for assessments to become an integral part of the instructional process, teachers need to change their approach in three important ways. They must 1) use assessments as sources of information for both students and teachers, 2) follow assessments with high-quality corrective instruction, and 3) give students second chances to demonstrate success (2007). In differentiated classrooms everywhere, a resounding mantra is Fair is not equal; fair is getting what you need. Assessments enable us to determine what students need. But for our assessments to be accurate, we need multiple measures of student understanding. We need evidence gathered over time in different ways to evaluate how effective the teaching and learning process has been. Tomlinson and McTighe (2006) suggest that when we gather a photo album rather than a snapshot of our students, we can differentiate instruction based on a more accurate evaluation of our students learning needs (Dodge). A students opportunity to learn is the single most important student success variable that schools can control. This seems straightforward, but researchers have discovered that, in many schools, the learning continuum is divided into three disparate entities: the intended curriculum, the implemented curriculum, and the attained curriculum. The intended curriculum is content specified by school or external measures (e. g. , national content standards). The implemented curriculum is content actually delivered by teachers. And the attained curriculum is what students learn. While most parents (and educators) assume congruity between the three entities, the discrepancy between them is, in practice, often surprisingly pronounced, in part because when teachers use the textbook as the curriculum for a course and cannot cover all the material, they commonly make independent and idiosyncratic decisions about what should be covered — directly influencing the students opportunity to learn. Research on OTL establishes a compelling argument for curriculum articulation.

Countering the Culture of Sex Over the past twenty years teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases between teenagers have been growing problems in the United States. In two articles, â€Å"Countering the Culture of Sex,† by Ellen Goodman and â€Å"Moms have strong impact on teen sexual activity,† by Daniel B. Wood solutions are brought as to how we can solve these growing problems. One text spends its time picking at the media, while the other shines the light on parents and guardians. Both writings push our society to see what is happening to the teenagers of our country, and asks our citizens to do something about it. While there is no clarity as to which paper has a greater understanding of how to solve this matter, by combining the ideas of both texts a solution is brought about that is sure to make an impact positively for this cause. In â€Å"Countering the Culture of Sex,† by Ellen Goodman, the author paints the portrait of a community that sells sex to kids just as easily as it sells any merchandise. Goodman says that the images broadcast to teenagers day in and day out creates this illustration of a world with no consequences for unprotected acts of sexual behavior. She says that teenagers are more greatly influenced by their favorite television stars than they are by their own parents. Teenagers are watching their favorite celebrities having unprotected sex with no â€Å"reality†. Television does not show its characters getting pregnant at sixteen or contracting HIV. The argument in this literary work is that children are fed a false image of sex and thus do not know what they are getting themselves into when they have unprotected sex. The author calls on Congress to get involved, â€Å"These messages that kids actually listen to ought to be piped into the hearing rooms where Congress is busy c oncocting a new welfare policy†. Goodman wraps up the article with a little sexual truth-in-advising, â€Å"one part passion to two parts diapers†. In â€Å"Moms have strong impact on teen sexual activity,† by Daniel B. Wood, the idea of parents having greater influence on their children than our society has given them credit for in recent years is used. Wood claims that parents are the key to keeping our children from making the mistake of unprotected and uneducated sex. This article reports that â€Å"21 percent of boys and 19 percent of girls have engaged in sexual intercourse before the age of fourteen.

â€Å"Sydney White† is a story about a tomboy named Sydney White, who was raised up by her foreman father and a group of construction workers since her mother died nine years ago. In this movie, Sydney White is set to be a freshman in a college. She is a happy go lucky girl. When it was the age for Sydney heading to the college, she decided to enroll and joined her late mom’s alma mater sorority which her mom proud and cherished much. She believed that by doing so, she will get closer to her mom and have the chance to experience the life which her mom went through before. As a legacy, Sydney was successfully chosen to be one of the Kappas in the college. On the first day, Sydney met Dinky, a nice, cute kappa legacy as her roommate. While both of them were on the searching to Kappa sorority house, Sydney’s naive, sincere and her candour had stole Tyler Prince’s attention, which is the president of Beta sorority house. He is a good-looking and smart man. He was then kind enough to offer himself to be the guide for both of them to the Kappa sorority house. Sydney had a great chat with him and this was seen by Rachel Witchburn, the princess president of the Kappa sorority house. Rachel is a pretty and confident girl, and is very conscious on her appearance and fame in the college. Sydney who had been in the limelight since the very first day had boosted her jealousy and as a result, Sydney had some confrontation with her. This is followed by kicking out Sydney from Kappa sorority house by giving the excuses that Sydney did not fulfill the condition to be a kappa. Sydney ended up living in the Vortex, a soon-to-be demolished house and also the home to seven great geeks or dorks in the college. However, Sydney had never give up for what she had received. In fact, she found some kindred spirit with the seven dorks. Her altruism made her felt that they, the resident of the Vortex have the same right as the Kappas and Betas in the college, she then rallied the seven dorks, asked them to stand up and voice out their rights by joining the student council. With the determination and cooperation from the seven geeks, plus some helps and supports from Tyler and schoolmates, in the end, Sydney was successfully been elected to be the new president of student council in the college. The movie â€Å"Sydney White† is an idea taken from the story â€Å"Snow White and the seven dwarfs†. Sydney White is the new and modern version of Snow White. I personally like the plot of the story. It is great and well arranged. Despite the good messages, determination, tolerance and the success of the hard work, the story also put in some problems that might be faced by the people especially students nowadays. For example, discrimination to the geeks, bullying, lack of confident in handling problems and confrontation. The story taught the people how to face and handle the problems and obstacles in our life. As we know that, life is not always smooth and easy, people need to learn how to handle it. Sydney White’s determination in facing the problems and confrontation between her and Rachel had been a good example and indication that we must not easily give up something in our life. Overall, it was a nice movie and I enjoyed watching it very much.

What are the social, cultural, and political implications of these developments? How does advertising and ‘promotional culture’ affect the society in which we live, our value str uctures, belief systems, and our ideas about what constitutes ‘the good life’? Our primary objective is to critically explore contemporary advertising, as it connects to larger questions of society and culture.Our focus will NOT be on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the advertising industry, nor will the course teach you how to create advertising campaigns, or how to design marketing strategies. Instead, we will draw upon different critical theories and empirical research methods, as a means of reflecting upon the broader social and cultural dimensions of advertising. We begin with a discussion of the relationship between advertising, promotional culture, and a social, economic, and cultural environment dominated by commodification.We then examine some of the dominant characteristics of post-modern advertising and promotional culture, using case studies of the representation of capitalism and the emerging phenomena of ‘green marketing’. Where to Find Privacy and Quiet Time in College As much fun as it is to always have such interesting and engaging people around you in college, even the most outgoing of students need some privacy from time to time. Unfortunately, finding privacy on a college campus can be more of a challenge than you might think. So just where can you go when you need a few moments (or even an hour or two) to escape from it all? Here Are Some Ideas 1. Rent a carrel in the library. At many larger schools (and even some smaller ones), students can rent a carrel in the library. The cost usually isnt too high, especially if you consider how much youll pay a month for a quiet place you can call your own. Carrels can be great because you can leave books in there and know that theres always a quiet place to study without being interrupted. 2. Head to a large athletic facility when its not in use. Consider checking out the football stadium, track, soccer fields, or another athletic facility when there isnt a game going on. A space you might traditionally associate with thousands of people can be blissfully quiet when no events are planned. Finding a little nook for yourself in the stands can be a great way to get some time to just sit and reflect or even catch up on your long-overdue reading. 3. Cozy up in a  large theater facility when theres nobody there. Even if there is no play or dance performance scheduled until later this evening, chances are the campus theater is open. See if you can go inside for a great place to get some privacy as well as some comfy chairs to do your homework in. 4. Try your house or residence hall during mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Think about it: When are you least likely to be hanging out in your hall or house? When youre in  class, of course. If you want some privacy in a place that is familiar, try heading home during the mid-morning or mid-afternoon when everyone else is off in the academic buildings- if you dont have a class, of course. 5. Head to a far corner of the campus. Download the campus map from your schools website and look at the corners. What places dont you usually visit? Those are probably the places most other students dont visit either. If you have some time, head to a corner of campus that never gets any visitors and find a little corner of the world to call your own for a while. 6. Reserve a music studio. First and foremost, however: Only do this if youre sure theres plenty of extra studio space at that time- never steal this vital resource from the students who really need it. If there isnt much demand for space, consider reserving a music studio for an hour or two a week. Whereas other students will be practicing their violins and saxophones, you can put some headphones in and get some quality relaxation or meditation time. 7. Hang out in an art studio or science lab. FMI Studies in Obesity Obesity: insights from fMRI imaging studies Abstract One-third of the US adult population is obese. Obesity is associated with serious medical complications and costs a lot of money. In my paper, we will study this phenomena with fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) when subjects were at resting state (subjects were instructed simply to keep their eyes closed and to not think of anything in particular). Before this, we postulate that there will be disruption in neural circuits, which result in obesity. There are four circuits that we mainly focus on: (a) reward, located in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the ventral pallidum; (b) motivation/drive, located in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the subcallosal cortex; (c) memory and learning, located in the amygdala and the hippocampus; and (d) control, located in the prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate gyrus (CG). We used SPM, which based on Matlab, to analyse our data, and processed the results by GCA (Granger causality analysis). Through it, we will get the connection between two ROIs(region of interesting). Key words: obesity; fMRI; resting state; GCA(Granger causality analysis) Introduction Obesity is a global problem with the improvement of our life. There are one-third of US adult population who is obese, whose body mass index(BMI)≠¥30 kg*m-2.[1] Undoubtedly, obesity costs a lot because it is associated with serious diseases(e.g. diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver and some cancers)[2,3]. What lead to obesity are complex and ambiguity, such as social and cultural factors, environments that promote unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity, individual factors, etc [4]. Obesity with long time can result in function changes in human brain, but we do not know how this works. New imaging technologies such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have provided new ways to investigate the relationship of human brain. Much of previous studies were based on PET images which focus on the brain dopamine system, they found that there are different between normal and obese in DA system. Methods Based on previous studies, we study function changes of human brain by fMRI. On account of discover that others found before, we support some hypotheses that obesity can result in difference between normal and obese. We focused on four brain circuits in our research which were discussed in drug-addiction. As well, what we found maybe provide a method to treat obesity. There are two groups, one is normal and the other is obesity. The information of subjects are showed in Figure1. In our experiment, there were three groups, which were obesity before surgery and after one month, compared with the normal control. We collected data form TangDu Hospital. These circuits work together and change with experience[5,6]. Moreover, there are other circuits involved in obesity which we will study further. Four circuits in obesity We processed data through SPM,[7] which is based on matlab. After that, we analysed the data by GCA(Granger Casual Analysis)[8]. At resting state, we found that there was abnormal in motivation/drive circuit which receded in obesity than normal (figure2). Because of the exception of motivation, it could lead to disorder of other circuits. In reward circuit, the saliency value to food stimulation was reset in obesity, which resulted in overeating to reach satisfy. Circuit of memory and learning maybe influence individual habit. When somebody who is overweight saw food or some place for more time. He or she would remember the stimulation and when he or she met it again, it would arouse memory to drive someone to get it. We also found that there was reduction in control circuit. Due to this reduction, obesity can not control their eating behavior very well even if they were full. Based   Figure2:Result of GCA [10] . on these disorder, we postulate that long-term obesity destroyed human brain function  through the top-down modulation[9]. Vulnerability to obesity A challenging problem in the neurobiology of obesity is to understand why some individuals become obese while others do not. Genetic factors are estimated to contribute between 45% and 85% of the variability in BMI [3,4]. Beyond that, we hypothesize that decreased sensitivity of reward circuit and the disorder of control circuit in obesity would lead a subject more or less vulnerable to food. At the same time, the environment that subjects could get high calorie food was significant. Because of these findings, obese could lose fat by intervening the brain circuits or controlling the environment around obesity. Discussion In our study, we just focused on four brain circuits. There were other circuits which involved in obesity. In further study, we would find them and research their function. In the future, our discover maybe be applied to clinic treatment with less wounds. There are some limitation in our experiment, for example, we didn’t get the result of fMRI what was gotten when subjects were at tasking state(somebody lies on bed with seeing images which are about low or high calorie food).
